Do Bernedoodles Bark Much?

A person giving a Quiet! command to a dog

All dogs bark—it’s just part of their nature. Its how they communicate. Bernedoodles aren’t usually heavy barkers, but they can pick up barking habits if they’re around other noisy dogs.

If your Bernedoodle is barking more than usual, it could be due to anxiety, boredom, or other factors. They might bark out of territorial instincts, separation anxiety, or simply for attention.

To keep barking in check, focus on addressing the root causes. Early exposure to various stimuli, proper training, regular exercise, and good socialization can help minimize excessive barking and keep your Bernedoodle happy and calm.

How can I train my Bernedoodle to reduce their barking?

  • Provide Plenty of Stimulation: Make sure your Bernedoodle gets enough physical exercise and mental engagement. Daily walks, interactive playtime, and regular training sessions are great ways to keep them occupied.

  • Create a Secure Environment: Ensure your Bernedoodle feels safe and comfortable in their living space. A secure environment can help reduce anxiety and unnecessary barking.

  • Use Available Training Resources for strategies on reducing reactivity and managing barking behavior.

  • Teach your Bernedoodle the Quiet! trick.

What activities can I do to keep my Bernedoodle busy?

  • Daily Walks: Provide exercise and mental stimulation.

  • Interactive Toys: Engage their mind with treat-dispensing or puzzle toys.

  • Playtime: Play fetch, tug-of-war, or hide and seek for physical exercise.

  • Puzzle Feeders: Make mealtime a challenge to keep them busy.

  • Socialization: Arrange interactions with other dogs and people.

  • Chew Toys: Use durable toys to prevent boredom.

  • Comfortable Resting Areas: Ensure they have a cozy spot to relax.

  • Routine and Structure: Maintain a consistent schedule to reduce anxiety.

  • Training Sessions: Use positive reinforcement to teach commands & keep them focused.

How can I teach my dog NOT to bark at cars and people?

To teach your Bernedoodle not to bark at cars and people, start by getting them used to these things slowly, from a distance. Reward with treats when they stay calm around cars & people. If they start barking, distract them with a toy or a command like “sit” or “quiet” to stop barking and give rewards for being quiet. Make sure your Bernedoodle gets lots of exercise & mental stimulation to keep them busy. Also, try to limit their exposure to things that make them bark while you're training.

By addressing their needs and providing proper training, you can help your Bernedoodle stay happy and less likely to bark excessively.
