The Perfect Mini Bernedoodle

A Mini Bernedoodle results from the crossbreeding of a Miniature Poodle and a Bernese Mountain Dog. Mini Bernedoodles typically weigh between 20 and 50 pounds, with an average weight of 28 to 40 pounds for us at Down Home Doodle.

What is the Mini Bernedoodle temperament like?

Mini Bernedoodles are the perfect companions, combining the best traits of Bernese Mountain Dogs and Poodles. With a calm, yet playful temperament, they fit seamlessly into any family. Their compact size suits apartment living, and their low-shedding coats make them ideal for allergy-sensitive homes. Friendly, intelligent, and loyal, Mini Bernedoodles are not only great with people and animals, but they also bring joy, love, and endless companionship to every moment.

What Goes into Creating a Mini Bernedoodle?

Most Mini Bernedoodles are created by breeding a Miniature Poodle to a Bernese Mountain Dog. This type of breeding can rarely be accomplished with a natural breeding. Artificial inseminations, transcervical inseminations or surgical inseminations are the most common method of breeding and should done only by a licensed Veterinarian. This can only be done after the female is at an optimal progesterone level. Progesterone testing is done with a blood test. Breeding Mini Bernedoodles is a fragile and expensive process that must be done by an experienced team to get the optimal results.

The second breeding method of breeding Mini Bernedoodles is by using two Mini Bernedoodles. This should only be done by an experienced breeder that understands coat and color genetics. If the incorrect dogs are used the breeding will result in puppies with unfavorable coat types and colors.

While you may assume that the Mini Bernedoodle is primarily bred for its striking appearance, its breeding actually focuses on producing a dog with minimal shedding with a disposition that is perfect for families. This breed is specifically tailored for individuals who desire a canine companion but suffer from allergies to shedding hair or encounter issues with excessive shedding. The Mini Bernedoodle is generally non to low-shedding. It remains a suitable choice for many allergy sufferers. Additionally, we purposefully breed Mini Bernedoodles for service and therapy roles, with several of our past puppies certified for such work. The adorable appearance of the Mini Bernedoodle is simply an added bonus.

How often should a Mini Bernedoodle be groomed?

The Miniature Bernedoodle requires grooming similar to the Miniature Poodle. Grooming requirements are influenced by the dog’s genetics: dogs with more Poodle ancestry will need more frequent grooming, while those with more Bernese heritage will need fewer visits to the groomer. The curlier the coat, the more grooming it will require. Most Bernedoodles should be brushed at least three times a week and trimmed every two to 4 months depending on the look you are hoping for.

Remember, low-maintenance grooming doesn’t mean no grooming at all. Even Mini Bernedoodles with straight coats can experience matting, so occasional trimming and clipping may be necessary. Keep a close watch on your dog’s coat and brush it at least twice a week, paying particular attention to areas prone to matting like behind the ears and the belly. You can find our favorite brush in our shopping list here.
