Bernedoodles, the charming mix of a Bernese Mountain Dog and a Poodle, have become very popular with dog lovers recently. The combination of the intelligent Poodle and loyal Bernese makes the Bernedoodles the ultimate family pet.
One thing that surprises many potential owners is the high cost of these lovable Bernedoodles. Though the price may seem steep compared to other breeds, there are several reasons behind it.
In this blog, we'll explore why Bernedoodles are so pricey and break down the factors that contribute to their cost.
Bernedoodles are charming and high-quality pets, which is why they often come with a higher price tag. The cost reflects the careful work and investment that go into breeding these dogs. From genetic testing and health checks to advanced breeding methods and overall care, several factors make Bernedoodles more expensive. Here’s a simple breakdown of why these puppies can be pricey.
Breeding Stock
Breeding stock is by far the largest investment in our program. We prioritize quality by holding back our most promising puppies and purchasing the best lines available, often spending over $10,000 on a single dog. However, even after investing a large amount of money, after extensive health and Genetic testing, we may decide not to include a dog in our breeding program if they don’t meet our rigorous standards. While this is a significant expense, it’s also the most crucial aspect of maintaining the quality and health of our lines. It’s the reason we proudly produce some of the finest Bernedoodle puppies in the world.
Genetic Testing
We expect to spend between $70 and $400 or more for detailed genetic testing results related to health conditions. This testing ensures Bernedoodle puppies are free from hereditary health issues.
Genetic testing for color, which helps ensure the right color and traits in Bernedoodle puppies, can be costly due to its complexity. The cost typically ranges from $100 to $300 or more, depending on the depth of the testing and the specific traits being analyzed. This testing helps Bernedoodle breeders achieve the desired color, coat type and patterns, making it an important investment.
Health Clearances
OFA (Orthopedic Foundation for Animals) testing is for hips, elbow, shoulders, patella, heart, eyes and other health issues. OFA testing generally ranges from $500 to $1,000 per Bernedoodle or Bernese Mountain Dog. PennHIP testing is just for hips and typically costs between $500 and $1,000 as well.
Vaccinations and Vet Checks
In the U.S., the average cost for vaccinations and vet checks for Bernedoodles varies depending on the location and specific services. Typically, vaccinations can range from $75 to $500 per visit, and routine vet checks usually cost between $50 and $500. These expenses help ensure that Bernedoodle puppies are healthy and up-to-date on their vaccinations before they go to their new homes. At Down Home Doodle, each of our puppies undergoes a comprehensive nose-to-tail examination conducted by a certified veterinarian.
Breeding Methods
Advanced breeding techniques like surgical or transcervical insemination can be quite expensive to create Mini Bernedoodles. Surgical insemination generally costs between $500 and $1,500, while transcervical insemination typically ranges from $300 to $1,000. These methods are used to improve the chances of successful conception and are essential for certain Bernedoodle breeding scenarios. In both breeding methods progesterone testing needs to be done to insure insemination is done at the proper time. This testing can be done at vet clinics for around $150 per test. Here at Down Home we own two state of the art machines to preform our testing in house. These machines cost over $14,000 each.
